Weekly reflections from Father Pablo to the Saint Joseph community and visitors.
Dear brothers and sisters,
As we enter the holy season of Lent, God’s Word presents Jesus in the desert, facing temptations. He experiences hunger, loneliness, and uncertainty, yet responds with complete trust in the Father. Many of our brothers and sisters in our community also live their own “desert”: the fear, instability, and suffering that come with an uncertain immigration status.
As a Church, we cannot remain indifferent. In a world where human dignity is often at risk, we are called to wield the spiritual weapons the Lord gives us: fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. These practices not only convert our hearts but also unite us in concrete solidarity with those who most need hope.
Therefore, as a parish, we want to live this Lent with commitment, especially accompanying our brothers and sisters who suffer because of their immigration status.
Fasting
We invite you to participate in a technology fast every Friday of Lent for the intention of immigrants who are suffering. On that day, we will use our cell phones only for essential calls, avoiding social media and messages. May this small sacrifice be a silent prayer for those living with anxiety and uncertainty.
Prayer
We will have a Holy Hour with confessions from 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., every Monday and Friday of Lent at the San José Chapel (Convent). We will pray especially for members of our community facing difficult immigration situations, particularly those who must appear before a judge. May they know they are not alone: the Church prays with them and for them.
Almsgiving
We will hold a second collection in which we invite every parishioner to give generously and thoughtfully. This collection will go to the charity and assistance programs of the Catholic Appeal, with the hope that the funds will be used in a special way to support our brothers and sisters affected by their immigration status.
Dear brothers and sisters, Christ overcame the temptations in the desert because He remained united with the Father. We too can overcome fear and despair if we walk together, sustained by faith and love. May this Lent make us a more compassionate, courageous, and united community.
You have my prayers and closeness. Let us ask Saint Joseph, protector of the migrant Holy Family, to intercede for us and care for every family in our parish.
Queridos hermanos y hermanas,
En estos días en que nos acercamos al tiempo santo de la Cuaresma, la Palabra de Dios nos presenta a Jesús en el desierto, enfrentando las tentaciones. Él experimenta el hambre, la soledad y la incertidumbre, pero responde con una confianza absoluta en el Padre. Muchos de nuestros hermanos y hermanas en nuestra comunidad viven también su propio “desierto”: el miedo, la inestabilidad y el sufrimiento que trae consigo una situación migratoria incierta.
Como Iglesia, no podemos ser indiferentes. Frente a un mundo donde la dignidad humana está en peligro, estamos llamados a usar las armas espirituales que el Señor nos ofrece: el ayuno, la oración y la limosna. Estas prácticas no solo nos convierten el corazón, sino que nos unen en solidaridad concreta con quienes más necesitan esperanza.
Por ello, como parroquia queremos vivir esta Cuaresma de manera comprometida, acompañando especialmente a nuestros hermanos y hermanas que sufren por su estatus migratorio.
Ayuno
Les proponemos ofrecer un ayuno de tecnología todos los viernes de Cuaresma en favor de los inmigrantes que están sufriendo. Ese día utilizaremos el celular únicamente para llamadas necesarias, evitando redes sociales y mensajes. Que ese pequeño sacrificio sea una oración silenciosa por quienes viven con preocupación e incertidumbre.
Oración
Tendremos una Hora Santa con confesiones de 9:00 p.m. a 10:00 p.m., todos los lunes y viernes de Cuaresma en la Capilla San José (Convento). Rezaremos de manera especial por los miembros de nuestra comunidad que se encuentran en situaciones migratorias difíciles, especialmente por aquellos que deben presentarse ante un juez. Queremos que sepan que no están solos: la Iglesia ora con ustedes y por ustedes.
Limosna
Realizaremos una segunda colecta en la que invitamos a cada feligrés a hacer un desprendimiento generoso y consciente. Esta colecta será destinada a los programas de caridad y asistencia de necesitados de la Apelación Católica Arquidiocesana, con la esperanza de que los fondos sean utilizados de manera especial para apoyar a nuestros hermanos y hermanas afectados por su situación migratoria.
Queridos hermanos, Cristo venció las tentaciones en el desierto porque permaneció unido al Padre. Nosotros también venceremos el miedo y la desesperanza si caminamos juntos, sosteniéndonos en la fe y en el amor.
Que esta Cuaresma nos haga una comunidad más compasiva, más valiente y más unida.
